Hardmans’ House Hosts Historical Tour

By Tiarnan Quigley

On Wednesday 25th October, Hardmans’ House located on Rodney Street organised an architectural tour of Liverpool’s historic Georgian Quarter that was packed with knowledge and interesting facts about the area.

During the hour long tour participants got to learn about the stunning buildings in the area including the 185 year old Gambier Terrace and the men who built them. However, it was not all about the buildings, street names too were explained and the stories behind their namesakes were told.

Speaking to the Georgian Quarter Reporter tour guide and Hardmans’ House volunteer Gwen Burgess said: “There’s an awful lot of history up here, in fact there’s not enough time to tell people, we say you need about 3 or 4 days to see everything because we just look at a tiny spot here,” she said.

Lizzie Johansson-Hartley from the National Trust, which took on Hardmans’ House in 2004 said that a growing movement has been developing in recent years in an attempt to get people to visit this part of Liverpool as most people tend to stay in the town centre and were missing out on an amazing area. She said: “Since June we’ve had a definite increase in people taking part. The Georgian Quarter and the Then and Now tours are the most popular of the four specialised tours that we offer. Next year we’re actually thinking of expanding to some more topics.”

Hardmans’ House is open to the public from the March 15th until October 28th. For any further information please contact Hardmans’ House either by telephone on: 0151 709 6261, by email: thehardmanshouse@nationaltrust.org.uk or at 59 Rodney Street Liverpool L1 9EX
